My project is a watercolor painting of an hourglass with black seeping from the top part into the clear blue below. It is meant to be an abstract representation of oil, liter, and other pollution that we are putting into the ocean. I’ve always loved watercolors, because in my first few years of school, (pre K through 3rd) we painted with water colors in our art class. I hadn’t done it in a while though and I wanted to further my understanding of the techniques, while also conveying a message about something I feel passionately about, namely, the ocean and how we are poisoning it. I used a sponge for some of the blending, and just a brush on canvas for the rest. For the black leaking in, I put a lot of black paint and then used water to help it drip down into the bottom part, where I had put a mixture of two different shades of blue and some green. The dark color scheme of the painting is intentional, it’s meant to look kind of dark and bleak. It’s difficult to put dark intense colors with watercolors because they’re not very pigmented unless you put very little water. I am pretty happy with how this painting turned out, but I think I’m going to do another more refined draft and see how the painting and the idea grows.

Environmental Documentary Project
For this project my partner Baylee and I first went and talked to the junior chemistry teacher, who gave us some email addresses and contact info to help us find some other sources that we could use within the documentary. He helped us find Anne Oliver, who ended up being a huge contributor to our film. We also learned a lot in class from various documentary making tutorials that Roxy showed us, and though at times both my partners and I wished for more support I feel that overall this project was pretty successful.
Logo Project
Project ReflectionI really enjoyed this project.I learned a lot about my style as an artist and about how designs can evolve over time, which is helpful since I tend to like to just leave things as they are. I also learned how to make a more hand-drawn looking design in photoshop, since I liked the way it looked drawn out and I didn't want it to be too crisp and mechanical looking. I really like this logo because I incorperated my favorite number into the first letter, and Carmen is my middle name which I went by for two years. The logo says a lot about me, and this was probably one of my favorite projects this year.

Self Portrait Project
This picture is meant to show that I have learned to make the best of any situation. The picture has been edited to look dreary and not have very much color. Also, the edges are blurred showing uncertainty. And yet the picture itself has a happy overtone. At the beginning of this year it seemed like the littlest things would get me down. Missed homework assignments, a passive aggressive comment, it didn't take much. As time went by I realized that that wasn't how I wanted to live my life, and stopped taking everything so seriously. I've learned to surround myself with people who make me smile, and how to find the good in everyone and everything.

Teacher Creature Project
Our Project Objectives: Envision and Critique to reflect. Recognize, demonstrate, and debate philosophic arguments about the nature of art and beauty (aesthetics).
Project Reflection
In this project we were meant to put the face of one of our teachers onto a different animal or monster, and create a document around that idea. According to the rubric there were different levels of proficiency that we could aim for, I aimed mostly for practitioner, which is the second highest level. The hardest part of this project for me was that I kept wanting to change it and I didn't like the way it looked. I persevered through by telling myself that it was just a project and wasn't going to have a huge effect on the rest of my life. I have learned that my style as an artist is very subjective and that I don't like trying to confine myself to one method or idea. I like to be able to change and do new and different things every time. I think that underlying structures have a big impact on the creation of art, depending on what those underlying structures are. For this project there were very specific things we had to do to get a good grade, and those had an obvious impact. But a more unconscious effect could be seen through what you know of the teachers personality, or of whatever your subject may be. |
Photoshop Tutorials
Landscape Project
In this project I learned the basic ideas behind foreground, middle ground, and background, and how they add depth to a picture. I also learned how to use the basic selection tools in Photoshop such as the magnetic lasso tool (used to outline Captain Jack) The quick selection tool (I used that one on the seagull) and the magic wand tool (which I used for the clouds). I also used a skill that I had learned a while ago, which is changing a Photoshop Document or PSD into a image compatible with Weebly- a JPEG. These files are different because a PSD has layers and a JPG does not. This was a very educational and enjoyable project.
